In June 2009, the idea of a gourmet pizza restaurant, located in the heart of Downtown Clarksdale, was born. Owners Buddy Bass and Joe Weiss, cousins,
are 4th generation Clarksdaleians who are proud of the history of Clarksdale and the new possibilities that await. With teenage children of their own, Buddy's wife Kris' idea was to create a place where kids and families would feel comfortable dining and relaxing. Second, we wanted to create a location that visitors to Clarksdale would enjoy and experience our local fare. Our number one goal is to make you feel as though you are dining with us as our friend. One should expect the same sincere feel you experience at a friend's home in the Mississippi Delta. Please, make yourself at home and ask plenty of questions.
In September 2009, the building, equipment, and concept were all in place and in walks our future partner, a young Baker from the hills of Tennessee, Chef Matthew Joseph. Chef Matthew arrived in Clarksdale via the Teach for America Program. As a new arrival to Clarksdale, the chef was contemplating his options to showcase his baking skills and after a 5 minute visit we knew he was home. Chef Joseph is up early each morning breathing life into his dough, which is hand mixed, rolled, and tossed. His processes are truly an art form with no two pizzas looking the same, but the quality, taste, and consistency are always perfect. Please, if you have the time, ask your server if you could have a chat with the Chef about his craft.
Why the name Stone Pony? Buddy's grandfather and Joe's great uncle, B Bass, Jr. was a very outspoken gentleman with many favorite sayings. When B was very loudly describing a most perfect item or situation, whether it was a beautiful car or a perfect golf shot, his most favorite line in a most convincing voice would be, "well that's a "STONE PONY!!". After some research we found collectable figurines, made in the early 1900's, had many different items inside the glass and the most prized collectable literally had a pony made of stone on the inside. We want to serve you wonderful food and create a dining experience that you will describe as a "STONE PONY!!"
In 1912 this building was completed, at that time it was the end building on the block, notice the windows on the south wall were simply bricked over when the next building was started. This historic building started out as Armstrong Drug Company. Then in 1952 Vernon and Jesse Hughes took over ownership to house their business, Martin Drug Store. In 1974 Bob Farris acquired the building to house his insurance company, Bob Farris Insurance Company. Then in 1997 John Mohead bought the building as a renovation investment. In 2005 Susan Flowers acquired the space to house an art gallery. Finally in 2009 the building was purchased by Stone Pony Pizza.
